400m is the distance between the museum of archaeology and the museum of contemporary art in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country. It is also the title of our new book on the controversy surrounding the archaeological discovery of the "ostraca from Iruña-Veleia": Hundreds of broken fragments of ancient Roman pottery into which have been scratched stick figures, numbers and alphabets, names of scholars and names of gods, and even what appeared to be the oldest evidence of a literate Basque culture.
Join us in conversation with sociologist Iñaki Martínez de Albeniz, contributor to the book, as we revisit some of the unconventional ways in which we tried to gain an understanding of the scientific, legal and political entanglement that followed after the inscriptions were denounced as a forgery.

Opening exhibition at Galeria La Taller
9/03/2018
When a committee of academic experts concluded that the engraved pottery shards from the archaeological site Iruña-Veleia were the product of forgery, they were sealed in boxes in an atmosphere of great polemic. They have been locked away from the public for over ten years now. The artists Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum have, however, dutifully copied each and every one of the 907 inscriptions. A large selection of these facsimiles will be on display at Galeria La Taller in Bilbao, together with a video in which different experts in favour of, or opposing, the theory that they are false, attempt to decipher the mysterious inscriptions.
