Between the 5th and the 7th of June 2019 we will be attending the international congress Postguerres / Aftermaths of War at the University of Barcelona, and presenting our work in progress on the reconstruction of a forgotten Nazi monument from the Civil War in Spain. In our presentation we will focus on the informal interventions the monument has been subjected to after its original historical meaning was lost in the course of time, such as the accumulation of layers of (political) graffiti and the recurring attempts to demolish it.
How can the unofficial history of this slab of stone help us rethink the role contemporary art practices can play in relation to contested heritage?
Our travel arrangements to the congres have been made possible with generous support from the CBK Rotterdam (Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam).
